Orchard

114 fruit trees and growing

Most of the trees survived the transplanting process and severe drought this summer. One has been bent by a deer walking over it and since we don’t have a fence yet the deer have come through and eaten the fruit off of the branches before it ever ripened. This isn’t necessary a bad thing as the first year it is a good idea to remove the fruit from the trees to deter it from wasting energy growing fruit and encourage it to put all its energy into growing roots and establishing itself.

Whips

We have a lot of trees and a lot of pots, we hope to trim new growth in the fall/spring and attempt to splice it onto root stock so we can grow more trees ourself without having to buy them.

Nursery

8 inches apart
Do not use any herbicides
Must hand weed, keep growing competition down
Should be good if they make it to 2 years old

Grafting

T-bud grafting in August (easier option)

Chip grafting is time consuming, probably good/ nothing wrong with it but is harder to do

Spray for scab – fungicide

Recommended by local farmer: Liberty herbicide
